Year 4 Seals

Seals May Update!

This week we have been enjoying Careers week. On Wednesday, we had a Careers Fair.

What we learnt:

We were visited by a business owner. They taught us about how to run a business, including; paying staff, having insurance and renting the property where the business is run from. We thought this was fascinating and did not know any of this before.

We also learnt how CPR is done. We got to have a go at this ourselves. It was fun to do something practical and useful.

What we enjoyed:

We really liked hearing about a range of different experiences that we’d never considered before. Hearing from the hairdresser was fascinating. The ‘poo quiz’ by Fen Bell, who discussed animal conservation, was funny! Plus, doing different activities such as building with marshmallows and sticks was enjoyable. We’d really like to do something like this again so that we can learn even more!

What inspired us:

The visitors from Fen Bell were inspiring, because they taught us about animals and inspired some of us to want to work in animal conservation. The air hostess also inspired us, because she gets to visit so many countries.

Happy Easter from Seals!

Well done Seals on another busy, hard-working and ambitious term!

We have had Science Week this term. We were visited by the Science Boffins and enjoyed learning about how mixing chemicals caused a reaction, learning about how fire is created and about animal habitats and camouflage! We also enjoyed an assembly from Southern Water where we learnt about water conservation. Also, the ducklings arrived at school. We got to see them hatch and meet them - we discussed the life cycle and how they made their way out of the eggs.

In Science, over this term we have been learning about electricity. We have really enjoyed this topic, discussing how electricity moves around a circuit and about conductors and insulators, which keep us safe. We built circuits to power lights, buzzers and motors.

Additionally, we have completed our PE unit on tennis. We developed our skills in forehand, backhand, sending and returning a ball.

We have also been impressing our adults with our knowledge of fractions and decimals. We can convert between 10ths and 100ths as fractions and decimals and represent these pictorially.

In English, we watched a video called ‘The Wishgranter’. We wrote about the granter himself and an explanation text on how to make the wish machine work. We enjoyed using a video to inspire our writing.

We have completed research on the i-pads for History, where we learnt about Anglo-Saxon’s religious beliefs. We also created Logo designs using ‘procedures’ on 2Logo in Computing.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break.

Seals March Update!

Seals Class had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day. We had an assembly, where we had to identify the ‘Masked Reader’. We enjoyed listening to some of our teachers and trying to guess who they were.

Then we had some Harry Potter themed tasks. We wrote some setting descriptions of Hogwarts Castle, with the help of Luna Lovegood! Later we drew Hogwarts Castle using a step by step guide!

In the afternoon, we were visited by Mrs Arnold, who came and read one of her favourite stories to us.

Seals February Update!

Over the past few weeks, we have been working very hard!

We have continued to learn about India. We investigated the main rivers of India and enjoyed using the I-pads to research more about them.

In Science, we have learnt about how sound travels. We made ‘telephones’ and discussed how, when the string is pulled taught, the vibrations can travel through the string and be amplified by the cup.

Seals have done exceptionally well in gymnastics over the past few weeks. We have learnt how to jump and land safely, how to hold our bodies safely in different positions and use multiple points of contact. We have built our physical strength and shown resilience in achieving these skills.

In English, we have really impressed Miss Franklin with our writing. We have written wonderful descriptions by extending our vocabulary, using personification, metaphors and similes. We also wrote formal letters to Mrs Brown, asking her to consider how we could become more eco-friendly as a school. Keep it up, Seals!

We have been particularly lucky this week to have three parents come to read to the class. We really enjoyed hearing them read to us.

On Friday, we were also visited by a theatre company who presented classic tales in French- we thought it was very funny and we learnt lots of French words.

Seals January Update!

We have had an excellent start back this term.

We were visited by Mrs Gasson, who taught us about South African culture. We created our own Ndebele hut art, which we really enjoyed.

In Geography we have started our new topic ‘Investigating India’ which we’re looking forward to exploring. We have identified it in an Atlas and completed a ‘scavenger hunt’ for facts.

During discussion for our new Science topic of ‘Sound’ we really impressed the adults with our current knowledge and look forward to learning more. We used our understanding from music and playing the Ukulele to inform our ideas.

In Music we have been learning new chords and even managed to play part of Stevie Wonder’s ‘I just called to say I love you’.

In PE we have begun our new topic in gymnastics. You can see our pike, straddle, tuck and shape movements.

Seals December Update!

Recently we have been doing some wonderful creative writing about The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. We were very excited to see who would win Star Writer!

In Maths we have been getting very good at our times tables and have been getting faster and more confident every week. We have also been problem solving using our knowledge of times tables and division facts.

In Art we have been using ModRoc to make Mayan masks, which we designed using what we have been learning during History.

In Science we have been learning about the digestive system. We enjoyed making this and creating ‘poo’. We got a clearer understanding of what each part of the system does.

Also, we have developed our skills in Tag Rugby and our PE coaches have been very impressed with our understanding of attacking and defensive positions.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Seals November Update!

Seals Class have had an excellent few weeks.

We have begun learning about Tag Rugby in PE. This has been lots of fun and helped us learn about moving into space. We have used our skills of defence and attacking positions form last term’s work in Netball.

This term we also begun our new History topic ‘The Mayans’, which we have really enjoyed so far. We acted out the conquistadors discovering the Mayan ruins in the jungles of Mesoamerica.

We were also visited this week by a Road Safety expert, who helped us learn further skills in how to be safe whilst crossing and walking near roads. We all got reflector badges to help us be seen when walking in the dark.

In Science, we have been learning about the human body and begun by learning about teeth. We know how to keep them healthy and which teeth are incisors, canines, premolars and molars.

Also, we have begun our new English text ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. We have written some wonderful descriptions using personification, metaphors, expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials.

Seals October Update!

We have had an exciting and busy few weeks in Seals Class!

We have continued to enjoy Netball and begun to play some positions, learning about attacking and defensive positions. Our movement with the ball has improved and we look forward to learning more every week!

For World Mental Health Day, we completed some mindfulness activities and discussed how our bodies might feel if we have poor mental health and what we can do to improve our mental health.

We have continued to learn about the Iron Man and even made some 3D models for homework. We have really enjoyed this unit of work.

During the Colour Run, we enjoyed getting very messy and raising money to support our fun school events.

During our Autumn Craft Workshops we created some lovely Autumnal pictures with our families and friends using leaf printing and paint.

September Update!

What an amazing start we have made to Year 4!

So far we have begun our English text of ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We have really enjoyed reading this so far and describing what the Iron Man is like.

In Maths, we have continued to develop our understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000.

Music has been particularly exciting, as we have had a special music teacher, Mr Ball, come to teach us Ukelele. We have learnt about the C, G, E and A strings and how to play the C chord. We have been able to play ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ on the A string too!

In Science, we have been learning about states of matter and had a go at being particles showing how they move in their different states, standing together in a solid and floating around the room as a gas.

In PE we have been learning Netball and Miss Franklin and the coaches have been so impressed with our use of space and excitement to learn more. We are practicing pivoting on the spot, rather than running with the ball and have just begun to learn how to shoot.
