Singlewell Primary School
Roles & Responsibilities
Having clear roles and responsibilities in primary school helps children develop important life skills such as teamwork, independence, and accountability. When students are given roles, like being a member of school council, a Reading or Maths mentor, a playground buddy or house captain they learn to take ownership of their actions and understand how their contributions support the whole school. These experiences build confidence, encourage respect for others, and lay the foundation for responsible behaviour both in and outside the classroom.
Head Pupils

Meet Freya and Aaron, our new Head Pupils!
They are very responsible Year 6 pupils who were elected to be Singlewell's Head Pupils.
At Singlewell, it is essential to teach our Year 6s that as the oldest in school, they are role models to the other children and therefore are first in line for certain responsibilities.
We wanted Head Pupils who would embody our CARES values at all times.
All Year 6 pupils received a description of what the role of Head Pupil involves and had the opportunity to apply. Many pupils wrote their applications, which all staff viewed and shortlisted six finalists collaboratively. The six finalists then presented why they would be best suited for the role in large assemblies and the children voted for who they wanted to be led by.
Freya: "I am very proud to be the Head Girl and cannot wait to show Governors and other visitors around! It will be fun to work alongside Mrs Catt & Mrs Broad. I look forward to sharing my imaginative ideas to develop the school."
Aaron: "I would like to represent our school values around the school. I am looking forward to adapting the responsibility of my role. I am also looking forward to assisting and working alongside Mrs Catt & Mrs Broad. I will be a positive role model around our school!"
The School Council represents the voice of the pupils and helps make the school a better place for everyone. Made up of elected representatives from each class, the council meets regularly to discuss ideas, concerns, and suggestions from their classmates. They work with teachers and school leaders to improve different aspects of school life, such as playground equipment, events, and fundraising activities.

Year 6 Reading Mentors
A Year 6 Reading Mentor plays an important role in supporting younger pupils with their reading development and confidence. Their responsibilities typically include listening to younger children read regularly, helping them to decode unfamiliar words, improve fluency, and understand the meaning of the text. They also encourage a love of reading by discussing stories, asking questions, and recommending books. As role models, Year 6 Reading Mentors demonstrate positive reading habits, patience, and responsibility, while developing their own communication and leadership skills. This role fosters a supportive learning community and helps promote literacy across the school.

Year 6 Library Monitors
A Year 6 Library Monitor helps to keep the school library organised, welcoming, and enjoyable for all pupils. Their duties often include shelving and tidying books, helping peers find suitable reading material and promoting good library habits. They also encourage a love of reading across the school by selecting reading material for the lunchtime reading trolley which they take out to the playground and find a quiet space for children to enjoy reading together or by themselves. As trusted members of the school community, Library Monitors demonstrate responsibility, teamwork, and enthusiasm for books while supporting others in developing their reading interests and skills.

Playground Equipment Monitor
A Playground Equipment Monitor ensures that playtimes are safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone. Their role includes organising and looking after the playground equipment, making sure there are new choices of equipment each week. Playground Equipment Monitors show reliability, care for others, and help create a positive and fun playtime environment for all pupils.
